Use press time, first-use date, water quality, and model capacity to decide when to replace a GRAYL GeoPress or UltraPress cartridge.
All GRAYL guides
Replace a GRAYL GeoPress or UltraPress cartridge when normal press time reaches about 25 seconds, or three years have passed since first use. The published litre and cycle limits help with planning, but source-water quality can shorten actual life.
GeoPress: up to 350 cycles / 250 litres.
UltraPress: up to 300 cycles / 150 litres.
A fresh GeoPress takes about eight seconds for 710 ml; a fresh UltraPress takes about ten seconds for 500 ml under suitable conditions. Resistance gradually rises as the cartridge loads.
When a normal-temperature cycle takes roughly 25 seconds—GRAYL also states 25–30 seconds on cartridge pages—plan to replace the cartridge.
Replace after three years from first use even if you have not counted every litre. Write the start date on your gear record or set a reminder when the cartridge first touches water.
Silt, sediment, and tannins shorten cartridge life. A cartridge used mainly with clear tap water may behave differently from one used in silty lakes or flood-affected sources. Published capacity is not a guarantee for every water source.

Especially cold water can take longer to press. If a cycle suddenly feels slow:
move to normal-temperature suitable freshwater when possible;
check whether the source contained unusual sediment;
confirm the bottle is assembled and vented correctly;
compare several consistent cycles;
replace if the press remains near the end-of-life threshold.
Never use excessive force to compensate for a clogged or exhausted cartridge.
Choose the clearest suitable freshwater source.
Avoid disturbing sediment when collecting.
Pre-filter visible silt through clean cloth.
Do not put soap or cleaning agents through the cartridge.
Do not add drink mix unless the correct one-way valve is installed.
Dry and store the cartridge according to GRAYL guidance.
Keep dirty bottle surfaces away from the clean-water spout.
Identify the bottle family: GeoPress or UltraPress.
Buy the exact compatible cartridge.
Keep it sealed until installation.
Follow the model-specific removal and installation instructions.
Record the new first-use date.
Responsibly dispose of the old cartridge according to local waste rules.
A spare cartridge is sensible for remote trips, but there is no need to open it early.
GRAYL publishes a shelf life of up to ten years for an unused, airtight cartridge stored under proper conditions. Once opened and used, follow the three-year/press-time guidance.
A new cartridge does not make every source suitable. GRAYL cartridges cannot desalinate seawater or brackish water and are not designed for industrial spills, extreme chemical contamination, nuclear incidents, or toxic blue-green algae.
Technical figures and operating limits on this page are based on GRAYL's published specifications and instructions:
These are manufacturer-published benchmarks, not a guarantee for every source. Press time and cartridge life vary with water quality, sediment, temperature, cartridge age, and user technique. Use suitable freshwater only: GRAYL cartridges do not desalinate salty or brackish water and are not intended for industrial spills, extreme chemical contamination, nuclear incidents, or toxic blue-green algae. Follow local advisories and choose another source when conditions exceed the manufacturer's guidance.
GRAYL states that the cartridge continues to protect as press time rises, but the slow press is the practical replacement signal. Do not plan to keep using it indefinitely beyond the threshold.
Yes, if you reliably track them. GeoPress is rated for about 350 cycles and UltraPress for about 300, subject to water quality.
No. The published guidance refers to first use. Keep an unopened spare sealed.
No. Do not expose the purifier cartridge to soap or cleaning agents.
GeoPress and GeoPress Ti use GeoPress cartridges. UltraPress and UltraPress Ti use UltraPress cartridges.
