The published purification system targets waterborne viruses, bacteria, and protozoan cysts. It also filters sediment and microplastics and uses activated carbon to reduce many chemicals, heavy metals, unwanted tastes, and odours.

Why UltraPress works well for travel

UltraPress is smaller than GeoPress by 210 ml per cycle and is about 96 g lighter. That difference matters when you are packing around airline limits, using a compact day bag, or fitting a purifier alongside a camera, jacket, and other daily essentials.

A practical travel routine looks like this:

  1. Carry the bottle empty when airport or venue liquid rules require it.

  2. At your destination, use the clearest suitable freshwater source available.

  3. Fill, vent, and press only when you need treated water.

  4. Dry the cartridge properly before long storage or the journey home.

A purifier bottle can reduce dependence on finding packaged water, but it does not replace local water advisories or judgment about the source.

Standard UltraPress or UltraPress Ti?

The UltraPress Ti keeps the same 500 ml capacity, approximately ten-second cycle, and 300-cycle cartridge family. Its titanium outer cup can be used separately for heating water or cooking over suitable heat.

Lower weight and lower purchase cost matter most

A titanium outer cup adds real value to your camp system

You mainly need a compact drink-through purifier

You want purification and a heat-compatible cup in one kit

Your trips are urban, mixed, or day-hike focused

Your trips include backcountry cooking or minimalist camp gear

The titanium model weighs 400 g, so titanium adds multi-use capability rather than making the complete bottle lighter.

Plan around the 500 ml capacity

Half a litre per press is convenient for one person, but it may require more cycles if you are filling a large hydration reservoir or treating water for a group. In those cases, the 710 ml GeoPress can be more efficient.

UltraPress is a strong fit when you:

  • drink and refill frequently rather than carrying a large volume;

  • travel solo;

  • have narrow pack pockets;

  • want a compact purifier for flights, trains, hostels, or day trips;

  • prefer lower carried weight over maximum capacity per cycle.

Cartridge care and replacement

The UltraPress cartridge is rated for up to 300 cycles or 150 litres. High sediment and tannin levels reduce that figure. Use the clearest source available and pre-filter visible debris if necessary.

Replace the cartridge once typical press time reaches around 25 seconds, or three years after first use. A sealed spare cartridge can be useful for a long trip, especially when the itinerary includes remote areas where a compatible replacement may be difficult to buy.

Sources and limitations

UltraPress is for freshwater. It cannot remove salt from seawater or brackish water and is not designed for industrial spills, extreme chemical contamination, nuclear incidents, high tannin concentrations, or toxic blue-green algae. Use another source when local information or visible conditions indicate those hazards.

Technical figures and operating limits on this page are based on GRAYL's published specifications and instructions:

These are manufacturer-published benchmarks, not a guarantee for every source. Press time and cartridge life vary with water quality, sediment, temperature, cartridge age, and user technique. Use suitable freshwater only: GRAYL cartridges do not desalinate salty or brackish water and are not intended for industrial spills, extreme chemical contamination, nuclear incidents, or toxic blue-green algae. Follow local advisories and choose another source when conditions exceed the manufacturer's guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Can UltraPress purify water from a tap?

It can be used with suitable freshwater taps as part of a travel routine, within the product’s published limits. Local advisories still matter; the bottle is not a universal answer to every contamination event.

Does UltraPress use the GeoPress cartridge?

No. UltraPress and GeoPress use different cartridge sizes. Select the UltraPress Replacement Cartridge.

Is the legacy Ultralight cartridge the same?

Do not assume so. The 68travel catalog separately lists an Ultralight Replacement Filter for the older Ultralight Compact Purifier. Current UltraPress owners should use the product specifically sold as the UltraPress cartridge.

Can I use drink mix in the bottle?

Use a compatible one-way valve and add mix only to the clean-water side. The UltraPress/UltraLight One-Way Valve option is the relevant accessory.
