Who benefits from the pairing?
A bottle plus sealed spare is practical for:
long international itineraries;
backpacking where the exact cartridge may be hard to find;

UltraPress Ti users who want the same compact cartridge family backed up.
For routine day trips near reliable delivery, the spare may not be necessary. The installed cartridge already carries a published rating of up to 300 cycles or 150 litres.

The separate cartridge is not needed to start using a new bottle. It is contingency stock.
Compatibility check
Use the product explicitly named UltraPress Replacement Cartridge. It fits standard UltraPress and UltraPress Ti.
Do not substitute:
a GeoPress cartridge, which is a different size;
the separately listed Ultralight Replacement Filter, which is described for the older Ultralight Compact Purifier.
Capacity and replacement planning
The UltraPress cartridge is rated for:
up to 300 cycles;
up to 150 litres;
replacement when press time reaches roughly 25 seconds;
replacement after three years from first use.
Source quality matters. Silt, sediment, and tannins shorten life. Carrying a spare is most valuable when those conditions are possible and compatible replacements are not easy to obtain.
Keep the spare sealed
GRAYL publishes up to ten years of shelf life for an unused airtight cartridge stored correctly. Open it when the installed cartridge reaches its replacement signal, not simply because the trip starts.
Record the first-use date of each installed cartridge so the calendar limit remains clear.
Standard UltraPress or UltraPress Ti?
The same spare fits both.
Standard UltraPress: 354 g and the simplest compact choice.
UltraPress Ti: 400 g with a titanium outer cup that can be used separately for heating and cooking.
Choose titanium for camp utility, not for a different purification cartridge.
Add a one-way valve if you use drink mixes
A compatible UltraPress / UltraLight One-Way Valve allows electrolytes or drink mix on the clean-water side without backflow through the cartridge.
Do not add flavouring directly to a cartridge setup that lacks the correct valve. When the valve is used, clean and dry it according to its instructions and keep soap away from the purifier cartridge.
Sources and limitations
A spare preserves continuity but does not change what the purifier is designed to treat. UltraPress does not desalinate seawater or brackish water and is not designed for industrial spills, extreme chemical contamination, nuclear incidents, or toxic blue-green algae.
