Compare GRAYL GeoPress and UltraPress by capacity, weight, speed, cartridge life, pack size, travel use, group size, and titanium options.
All GRAYL guides
Choose GeoPress when you want more treated water per cycle. Choose UltraPress when compact size and lower weight matter more.
Both use the same fill–press–drink concept and publish the same microorganism removal rates. The buying decision is mainly about 710 ml versus 500 ml, 450 g versus 354 g, and how many cycles you expect to make.

570 g GeoPress Ti |
400 g UltraPress Ti |
The extra 210 ml per press adds up when you:
refill a separate bottle or hydration reservoir;
share treated water with another person;
stop less often;
use the purifier around camp;
have enough pack space for the wider body.
GeoPress also has a higher published cartridge capacity: up to 250 litres versus 150 litres for UltraPress. This does not automatically mean a longer calendar life; source-water quality and frequency of use still matter.
Shop the 710 ml GRAYL GeoPress
UltraPress saves 96 g in the standard models and takes up less space. It makes sense for:
solo travel;
compact carry-on packing;
day hikes;
narrow backpack side pockets;
frequent refills where 500 ml per cycle is sufficient.
You will make more cycles to produce the same total volume, but the bottle is easier to carry between sources.
GRAYL publishes the same pathogen-removal percentages for both bottle families: 99.99% of viruses, 99.9999% of bacteria, and 99.9% of protozoan cysts. Both also filter sediment and microplastics and use activated carbon to reduce many chemicals, heavy metals, unwanted tastes, and odours.
The capacity and format differ; the intended purification scope is comparable.
No. The cartridges are different sizes and are not interchangeable.
GeoPress and GeoPress Ti use the GeoPress Replacement Cartridge.
UltraPress and UltraPress Ti use the UltraPress Replacement Cartridge.
The separately listed Ultralight replacement filter belongs to the older Ultralight Compact Purifier family.
Titanium adds a heat-compatible outer cup with folding handles. It does not make the complete purifier lighter:
GeoPress Ti: 570 g versus 450 g standard.
UltraPress Ti: 400 g versus 354 g standard.
Choose titanium for multi-use camp functionality, not because you expect a faster cycle or a different cartridge.
One traveller, small pack: UltraPress.
Two people or frequent decanting: GeoPress.
Urban and mixed international travel: UltraPress.
Base camp, vehicle travel, or higher per-cycle demand: GeoPress.
Compact backcountry kit with a cook cup: UltraPress Ti.
Higher-capacity expedition kit with a cook cup: GeoPress Ti.
Neither bottle can desalinate seawater or brackish water. They are not designed for industrial spills, extreme chemical contamination, nuclear incidents, or toxic blue-green algae. Choose clear freshwater, follow local advisories, and use another source when conditions fall outside the published limits.
Technical figures and operating limits on this page are based on GRAYL's published specifications and instructions:
These are manufacturer-published benchmarks, not a guarantee for every source. Press time and cartridge life vary with water quality, sediment, temperature, cartridge age, and user technique. Use suitable freshwater only: GRAYL cartridges do not desalinate salty or brackish water and are not intended for industrial spills, extreme chemical contamination, nuclear incidents, or toxic blue-green algae. Follow local advisories and choose another source when conditions exceed the manufacturer's guidance.
Both rely on steady body weight. GeoPress is faster per cycle according to the published figures, but cartridge age, sediment, tannins, and water temperature affect pressing effort.
GeoPress has the higher rating at 350 cycles / 250 litres. UltraPress is rated for 300 cycles / 150 litres.
UltraPress is more compact. Carry either bottle empty when liquid controls apply and confirm current airport rules.
UltraPress suits lighter, smaller kits. GeoPress suits hikers who want more water per stop or treat water for someone else.
