How MOVA globes work

A MOVA globe moves inside a shell that stays still. The printed inner sphere floats in clear fluid and gently rotates when hidden solar cells receive enough indoor light. The outer acrylic shell remains stationary on its stand, with no plug, battery pack, or visible motor.

The video shows the motion better than a still photograph: the clear outer surface does not turn, while the Earth graphic moves inside it.

What moves, and what stays still?

MOVA describes four pieces of the system:

  1. A transparent outer shell made of acrylic. This layer does not spin, so fingerprints stay on a surface you can wipe.

  2. An inner globe that carries the map, planet, or artwork. It turns inside the shell.

  3. Clear fluids between the shells. They let the inner globe move smoothly. A small bubble at the bottom is a normal density difference, not a leak.

  4. Hidden solar cells and magnets. The cells use ambient light to power the movement. The magnets interact with Earth’s magnetic field to create the turning force.

The result is a moving display piece with no switch or trailing cord.

What “solar-powered” means here

The cells are for indoor décor, not outdoor solar use. MOVA says fluorescent lighting, LED lighting, and indirect window light are the usual sources. A darker graphic often needs brighter or more direct light so enough energy reaches the cells through the film.

When the room goes dark, rotation slows and can stop. When the lights come back, movement resumes. Treat that as expected behaviour, not a fault.

A verified 68travel review of the Earth with Clouds model makes the same practical point: enough light matters.

Beautiful object. Works fine in sufficient light.

Why can nearby metal affect rotation?

The same magnetic interaction that creates movement also makes the globe sensitive to iron, magnetized stands, large electronics, metal surfaces, and nearby MOVA globes. If the globe stops, the placement and troubleshooting guide gives the checks in the right order.

Is this the right kind of globe for you?

The design is a good fit when you want:

  • a gently moving object on a desk or shelf during the working day;

  • a gift that feels kinetic without looking like a toy or a lamp;

  • a geography, space, or art graphic that stays in motion without a cable trailing off the furniture.

It is a poor fit when you need guaranteed motion in a dim bedroom or a window that gets harsh midday sun. Travel packing rules belong on the care page.

What you are choosing next

Next, choose the graphic, then match its diameter to the available space in the size and placement guide.
