How to Choose the Right Wooden World Map for Your Home

A Founder’s Guide to Size, Style & Installation

As travellers who turned our passion for exploring the world into a craft, we know how powerful maps can be. A wooden world map isn’t just a decoration - it’s a memory keeper and a future‑adventure planner. In recent years, wood wall décor has surged in popularity because it combines natural warmth with modern design and aligns with the growing emphasis on sustainability. Many homeowners prefer natural materials and environmentally responsible finishes and wooden maps fit perfectly into that trend. Meanwhile, the global wall‑decor market is growing, fuelled by demand for unique and personalised art. We started 68travel to create maps that capture that spirit of adventure and sustainability - maps made by travellers for travellers, handcrafted by our skillfull production team and shipped worldwide.

Who is a wooden world map best for?

A wooden map isn’t a one‑size‑fits‑all product; it speaks differently to different people.  Here’s who we see loving our maps the most:

  • Design‑conscious homeowners: You appreciate clean lines, quality materials and statement pieces that elevate your space. A wooden map adds warmth, texture and an organic feel without cluttering a minimalist interior.
  • Travel lovers and memory‑keepers: Like us, you’re happiest when planning your next trip or reminiscing about past journeys. Our maps let you mark the places you’ve been and dream about where you’ll go next. They’re more than décor; they’re a living travel diary. We’ve seen how travellers often collect souvenirs after every trip to revisit those memories.
  • Gift buyers: Looking for a meaningful wedding, anniversary or housewarming gift? A personalised wooden map shows that you’ve thought about the recipient’s passions and gives them something to enjoy for years.
  • Parents and educators: Maps inspire curiosity about geography and cultures. We’ve had parents tell us their kids learned continents and capitals by pointing at the map on their bedroom wall.
  • Commercial spaces: Offices, Airbnbs and studios often need a focal point that sparks conversation. Our larger maps (XL, XXL, MEGA) make an impression in reception areas or communal workspaces.

Choosing the right size

Selecting the correct size is about balancing impact with proportion. Our maps range from L120 (120 cm wide) up to a 300 cm MEGA. We always recommend measuring your wall and leaving breathing space around the map. For a small office or narrow wall, the L120 works beautifully. The L150 suits most living rooms, and the XL (200 cm) is perfect above a sofa or bed. If you have a feature wall or high ceiling, consider the XXL (250 cm) or MEGA (300 cm) to create a show‑stopping installation. Painter’s tape can help you visualise how each size fills the space before you order.

2D vs 3D: Depth matters

All of our maps consist of multiple wooden layers, which gives them depth. Our “2D” maps have a uniform thickness on the visible layer - ideal for clean, flat interior designs. The “3D” versions vary in thickness and cast subtle shadows; they come alive under changing light and create a stronger statement.  Choose 2D if you want a sleeker look, or opt for 3D if you love the interplay of light and texture.

Will it work on your wall?

A successful installation starts with understanding your wall surface. Our double‑sided sticky tape works on smooth, non‑oily surfaces and even slightly uneven walls.  If your wall is textured or rough, we recommend using hooks and nails or a strong construction adhesive. The largest panels (EuroAsia and North America) usually have recesses for hooks, depends on the map model. You can install on wallpaper too, but be aware that removing the tape may damage the paper. Keep your map indoors in a temperate room - wood and humidity aren’t friends.

Colours and room styling

No two wooden maps look exactly the same and that’s the beauty of natural wood. We use natural stains, carefully selected for each style (Classic, Industrial, etc.), and offer multi‑ or single‑colour options. If you’re unsure about colours, order a returnable sample pack. Display the samples on your wall under natural and artificial light to see which finish harmonises with your furnishings. Remember that variations in grain and hue make every map unique.

Common concerns before buying

We hear a lot of the same questions, and we’re always happy to answer them:

  • Geographical accuracy: Our maps are designed to be decorative, not navigational. We use the Mercator projection and intentionally enlarge some islands so they’re visible.
  • Islands included: Every World map comes with 56 standard islands. You can add remote, exotic or Antarctic islands or even request custom ones.
  • Laser burn marks: Small burn marks and a smoky scent are normal after laser engraving. These fade quickly, and the marks add character to the piece.
  • Colour customisation: We can craft your map in any single or multi‑colour combination.
  • Best picks by buyer type

Everyone has different priorities when choosing a map. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Design lovers: Go for an XL or XXL map in a neutral tone like walnut or oak; choose 3D for depth.
  • Travel addicts: Pick the more advanced editions to get extra aeroplanes, ships and the monuments panel. Use pins to track where you’ve been and set goals for future trips.
  • Gift buyers: Any wooden map makes a thoughtful gift. Add a personalised engraving or an LED lighting upgrade for extra wow factor.
  • Practical buyers: If installation or wall type worries you, start with a smaller L120 map. It’s lightweight and easier to mount.
  • Parents: Choose a playful colour scheme and involve the kids in placing the islands. It’s a fun geography lesson they’ll remember.
  • Commercial spaces: XXL or MEGA maps command attention in offices, Airbnbs and studios. Consider customised branding or colour schemes to match your space. We can personalize any aspect of the map.

Installation and care

We design our maps so that installation is an enjoyable part of the experience. Expect to spend about two hours mounting a world map. You’ll need scissors for the tape, a level, masking tape and a tape measure. We provide detailed instructions and templates, and many customers install the map solo; however, having a friend helps with alignment. For removal, warm the tape with a hairdryer and gently twist the panel until the foam separates - never pull or you might damage the wall or the wood.

Once installed, there’s little maintenance. Check occasionally that the tape holds, especially in high‑traffic areas, and avoid exposing the map to moisture. Treat it like any other piece of fine furniture - dust gently and enjoy how it ages.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best wall decoration for someone who loves to travel?
A wooden world map is an ideal choice for travel lovers.  It’s a statement piece that adds warmth and lets you track your journeys. Our maps come with pins and markers so you can record the places you’ve explored and plan future routes.

How can I decorate a blank wall without making it feel cluttered?
Wood wall décor offers balance: natural grain creates a focal point without overwhelming the room. Choose a map that covers roughly 60–75 % of the furniture below it and leave breathing space around the edges.

Are wooden wall maps eco‑friendly?
Sustainability is central to modern interior design. We use responsibly sourced wood and eco‑friendly finishes. Our wooden products use FSC‑certified timber or reclaimed wood.

Why choose a wooden map instead of a paper poster?
Wood provides texture, dimensionality and longevity. Paper fades and tears over time; a wooden map ages gracefully and becomes part of your home’s architecture.

Are there customisable options for wall maps?
Yes.  Choose different sizes, colours and finishes. Add engraved names or dates, select pin sets and even request LED lighting. We can also create custom maps of specific countries or regions.

Are wooden maps a good gift for travellers?
Absolutely. Travellers often collect souvenirs to relive their adventures. A wooden map displays those memories beautifully and makes a thoughtful gift for weddings, anniversaries or housewarmings.

How do I choose the right size of wooden world map for my room?
Measure your wall and pick a size that fills 60–75 % of the width of the furniture beneath it. L120 suits small offices, L150 works for most living rooms and XL or XXL make dramatic focal points.

Do you ship internationally?
Yes.  We ship worldwide from our workshops in Slovakia. Delivery times vary by region; you’ll receive tracking details when your order ships.

Do your maps include country names and capitals?
Our maps feature etched country borders and names. Some designs include capitals and major cities. We also offer minimalist versions if you prefer a cleaner look.

Can I get a wooden map of my country or region?
These handmade pieces depict the outlines of specific countries and regions with precise engraving and cutting. They stand out in both modern and traditional interiors and make wonderful gifts or conversation starters. 68travel offers hundreds of country and region map variants, so travellers can celebrate their roots or favourite destinations.

How do LED wooden maps work and what atmosphere do they create?
LED maps combine layered wooden craftsmanship with integrated backlighting. A remote lets you change colours and light effects, and the acrylic backing on metal stands makes installation straightforward. Map's lighting plugs into a standard outlet and lighting can be customised to suit different moods.

What is a full‑colour 3D wooden map and is it right for me?
These maps use UV printing on multilayered wood to deliver rich colours and depth, creating a focal point for any room. They come in various sizes and styles and include our standard 56 islands, country names and geographic features. Full‑colour maps complement rustic or modern décor (they’re designed to suit all styles). Pieces fit together seamlessly and come with mounting stencils.

How does a full‑colour LED illuminated map differ from a regular LED map?
These maps pair vibrant UV‑printed colours with LED backlighting, turning a blank wall into an illuminated record of your travels. They feature remote‑controlled lighting effects, four wood layers on an acrylic base and easy installation with stainless‑steel stands.

Do you have illuminated maps or pictures of specific landmarks and flags?
Beyond world and country maps, 68travel’s LED collection includes illuminated panels featuring world monuments, national flags and city landmarks. These pieces blend artwork and ambient light to create a striking effect in living rooms and offices. Customers often ask us for customized pictures as well.

Can I add pins to track my travels?
Yes. We offer coloured pins or flags to mark places you’ve visited or plan to visit. Additional pin sets and flags sets are available as well.

How easy is it to install a wooden map?
Installation takes about two hours. It’s doable alone, but having a helper makes alignment easier.

What is the typical delivery time for a wooden map?
Standard maps usually ship right away, we have hundreds of map variants in stock. Custom engraving or special finishes may add a few days. We can also ship overnight to many destinations.

What makes 68travel different from other map brands?
We’re an original manufacturer, not a reseller. We design and produce every map ourselves. Our brand was created by travellers for travellers, and we use responsibly sourced materials, modern manufacturing and careful hand‑finishing.

Do you offer maps of specific countries or regions?
Yes. We can create detailed maps of individual countries or continents. Whether you want a map of Europe, the USA or a specific island group, we can tailor a piece to your needs.

What is the price range for wooden maps?
Prices vary with size, complexity and features. Smaller maps are more affordable; larger panels with LED lighting and custom engraving cost more. Because we manufacture everything ourselves, we keep pricing fair and transparent.

Do you use sustainable materials?
Yes.  We use responsibly sourced wood and low‑VOC finishes. Many pieces incorporate FSC‑certified or reclaimed timber, and we reuse off‑cuts to reduce waste.

Can I use your maps to plan future trips?
Definitely. Use pins and markers to distinguish places you’ve visited from those on your wish list. Having the map on your wall keeps your travel dreams visible.

Do you offer corporate gifts or bulk orders?
Yes. Wooden maps make memorable corporate gifts. We can customise maps with company logos or geographic focus areas and offer volume pricing. Contact us with your requirements.
